Teaching English to children

The Thai government has added English to the school curriculum and is determined that all school children should be taught English as a second language. The problem is that Thailand simply does not have anywhere near enough English-speaking teachers to do this. LemonGrass works closely with the local education authority to identify schools that have few or no English-speaking teachers and places volunteers accordingly.

Our English teaching projects are based in one of the many primary schools in Surin. Children are aged 6-12 and class sizes are typically 15-25 pupils. Thai children are very respectful and polite and really enjoy the contact with the volunteers.

LemonGrass and the school will arrange a flexible teaching program including subject matter for the volunteers to work with. However, it really is up to the individual volunteer to play it how they like. Remember, we are not looking for certified teachers (although they are definitely encouraged to come): the children and teachers have little or no English knowledge. Any enthusiastic person can really make a difference.

Teaching projects run Monday morning to Friday lunchtime and there is approximately 2 hours of teaching a day.

LemonGrass will provide a translator at the beginning of the project to ensure volunteers, teachers and pupils alike all understand each other and are able to work comfortably together.

Some volunteers may not feel completely confident with their ability to teach; especially as they may never have done this before. If this is the case then we would suggest that the volunteer may like to look into doing a short course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) before volunteering. TEFL courses are not included in the price of the volunteering project and we believe they are not necessary to carry out the project.

Fact file

Teaching projects can be as long or as short as you like. We recommend that you should aim to spend a minimum of two weeks on the project to allow you to carry out a meaningful amount of teaching and, of course, allow you to bond well with the children. How long you actually stay here is entirely up to you, but the longer the better!
